What To Look For In A Video Game Review

You’re interested in a particular video game or console but you want to get a bit more information, possibly a personal review about the product. If you go online for a review, you’ll find that for every game out there will have a wide amount of opinions ranging from “incredible,” “best one in 20 years,” “a game-changer,” to “so 5 minutes ago,” “horrible in every way,” or just “Worst. Game. Ever.” The trick is to find a balance in reviews; obviously what is exciting for one can be tedious to another, what is groundbreaking to one can be offensive to another. Some of things to look out for when checking out reviews, particularly when looking for objectiveness are:

-Basic information (Xbox, Playstation, Wii, PC, ratings, etc.)

-Graphics & Audio (smoothness, clarity, jerkiness or fuzziness)

-Controls (easy to understand, usefulness, complicated, etc.)

-Technical issues (glitches, load times, etc.)

-Quality of game play (objective, plot, levels, missions, etc.)

Did the reviewer describe how easy or difficult it was to complete the game, and give the information in a concise manner; also did they do it without giving too much away? Did the reviewer actually finish the game, and does it stand up to repeated plays? Also did they describe who this game would be best for, and would be wise to avoid it? Finally, if the reviewer does say things like “Best game ever!” there should be adequate reasons to back this up, and be open to criticism. Remember, not everyone will share the reviewer’s point of view, and to be objective they should be prepared to take a little heat when necessary.

In this technological age there is easier access than ever for one to post their opinions, and particularly for a tech-savvy game player there can be a wealth of useful knowledge to post in an online review. At the same time there is an abundance of dross from half-thought conclusions and inadequate information. However, with a little objectiveness and research on the reviewer’s part, a great video game review can be posted that everyone can enjoy.

Perhaps the reviewer could also say how long it took for him/her to finish the game; I’m not really interested in games that someone can finish in a day.

my God, i thought you were going to chip in with some decisive insght at the end there, not leave it with ‘we leave it to you to decide’.

  3. PS3 Prestige Hack Says:

PS3 is so much better than the XBOX. I owned the xbox first and then bought the PS3 with almost the same games for both. After a few months of compairing, I came to the conclusion that the XBOX was crap and sold it. If you are in the market then, PS3 is the way to go!!
